Day trip to Lothal
This tour is designed for history and archaeology enthusiasts who wish to visit the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation city of Lothal.
Over 4000 years ago, Lothal was a highly developed port city, with trading links to Mesopotamia and Egypt. The city exhibits all the typical features of an advanced Harappan civilisation including a well-planned city, neatly laid out roads of uniform width, a sewage system, use of measures and standards, etc. The city was divided into two parts, a citadel and a lower town. The rulers lived in the citadel, which featured paved baths, underground and surface drains and a potable water well. The lower town contained commercial and residential areas.
Lothal has two notable features distinguishing it from other Indus cities:
In 1976, a museum was setup to display the artifacts recovered from excavations. It has an artist’s depiction of Lothal as well as introductory write-ups and maps about the site. It also contains beads, terracotta ornaments, replicas of seal and sealings, shell and ivory objects, copper and bronze objects, animal and human figurines, weights, painted potteries, etc.
We will pick you up from your hotel and drive 2.5hrs to Lothal. We will spend 2-3 hours in Lothal, visiting the sites as well as the Archaeological Museum. After lunch, we will return to Ahmedabad.
